Duties and Responsibilities
The Chancery Clerk’s Office has a multitude of duties and functions which are governed by statutes and court rules, as well as guidelines established by the State Department of Audit and the Department of Finance and Administration.
The Chancery Clerk is responsible for maintaining and recording all land transactions, such as deeds, deeds of trust, assignments, oil and gas leases as well as federal tax liens, lis pendens, construction liens and military discharges. This office is also responsible for the collection of delinquent property taxes that have sold at prior years’ tax sales.
The Chancery Clerk is Clerk for the Board of Supervisors, and therefore responsible for preparing and recording the official minutes of all Board meetings. As County Auditor and Treasurer, the Clerk oversees the financial affairs of the County to ensure good stewardship of County funds.
The Chancery Clerk is Clerk for the Chancery Court where cases involving land or domestic matters are filed. Examples of these types of cases are estates, guardianships, conservatorships, divorces, child custody, adoption, property disputes, and other matters of equity.
Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are here to serve you, so do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. We are open during lunch hours unless we are short staffed.
